Oklahoma State University: Cowboy Innovations is the New Home of OSU Tech Ideas
The seatbelt, the internet, rocket fuel, chemotherapy drugs, and even the Gatorade all came from universities. In fact, countless technologies have had some type of academic involvement in their creation or development.
For Oklahoma State University, the new bridge for this development will be Cowboy Innovations, which enables technologies and ideas developed at OSU to impact the world.
âOSU, like other universities, is constantly generating new ideas,â said Zach Miles, senior associate vice president for technology and economic development. “These ideas will now flow through Cowboy Innovations, where they can become something that impacts the state and the nation.”
OSU Vice President for Research Dr Kenneth Sewell said OSU is committed to maximizing the positive societal impact that research creates.
âCowboy Innovations will facilitate economic development by transparently supporting how we transform OSU discoveries and inventions into market products, start-ups and corporate partnerships,â he said.
Announced on September 17, the move unifies existing technology development offices and programs into a single point of contact for industry engagement, Miles said.
âThrough this unification, Cowboy Innovations can provide the highest level of service to internal and external stakeholders and accelerate mutually beneficial engagements with the industry,â said Miles. “New life-changing products and services, along with economic growth and diversification, will occur.”
Miles said the reorganization will also help attract industry engagement and provide Oklahoma with high-tech job opportunities, tax revenue and a wider range of savings. The hope, he said, is “to see this enhance the success of economic development and diversification in Oklahoma as well as help weather economic downturns.”
âCompanies have unresolved needs and opportunities and are looking for long-term partners to help them,â said Daniel Will, executive director of Brightest Orange Ventures, now part of Cowboy Innovations. âOklahoma State University has a tremendous number of innovative engineers and scientists, along with excellent facilities and equipment, which can generate solutions to today’s problems and opportunities.
“This new organization will streamline the connection of OSU’s research and development capabilities with industry, quickly bringing new solutions to market.”
Cowboy Innovations will also leave room for growth. Over the next few years, the Cowboy Innovations team plans to add physical and monetary resources to accelerate the translation of ideas into business opportunities and to attract and support high-tech companies in the region.
âCowboy Innovations will build on this initial launch and seek to engage more proactively in economic development, diversification and the entrepreneurial ecosystem within the state, nation and globally,â said Miles.
âWe will seek to increase mutually beneficial engagements with industry, but also with state and federal agencies. We plan to be a source of start-ups and a resource for businesses that can benefit from the use of personnel and OSU and OSU Research Park physical resources. “
